5. SUMMARY AND SUGGESTION

5.1      Purpose of Practicum

The purpose of holding a teaching demo in the SEA-Teacher program organized by SEAMEO is to provide an opportunity for education students to practice their teaching skills in a real classroom environment. Through this session, students can apply the theories they have learned in the curriculum, as well as receive direct feedback from mentors and students. This teaching demo also serves as a means to evaluate students' abilities in designing and implementing effective learning, as well as strengthening their self-confidence as prospective educators.

The things you get when participating in this SEA Teacher program are:

a.       Providing an opportunity to apply teaching methods and techniques directly

b.      Obtaining input from mentors and students to improve teaching skills

c.       Assessing the effectiveness of student teaching in real situations

d.      Increasing student confidence and readiness as educators

e.       Encouraging the exchange of ideas and teaching methods between students from various countries

5.2      Procedure of Practicum

Step 1: Onboarding

Before carrying out activities, all SEA Teacher students are required to attend orientation activities. This orientation was held on October 1, 2024 at Dong Thap University, Vietnam, which was attended by 32 Filipino students and 7 Indonesian students. The activities carried out in this orientation were an introduction to Dong Thap University, an introduction to lecturers and students, a meeting with supervisors, and joint documentation. Dong Thap University also held a Welcoming Meal Party for SEA Teacher students. Not only that, SEA Teacher students were also invited to tour Dong Thap University and historical places around Cao Lanh.

Step 2: Visiting the Practicum School

On the first day of visiting Future Integrated School, SEA Teacher students were required to attend a meeting with the school. During the meeting, the school explained the history and education system of Future Integrated School. After the presentation, students were invited to tour Future Integrated School.

Step 3: Observation

During the observation, students need to fill out the observation sheet provided by their respective supervisors. I conducted two observations, the first on October 2, 2024 and the second on October 4, 2024. In the first observation, I observed a class that was studying mathematics and in the second observation the class I visited was studying the material about unity.

During the observation, I observed and recorded the teaching methods used and the interactions between the teacher and students. By observing the teaching strategies used, such as the way the material is delivered and the techniques of interaction with students, I can evaluate the effectiveness of the method and determine what needs to be improved.

Step 4: Make a Lesson Plan for Teaching Demo

Before starting the teaching demo, I first prepared a comprehensive lesson plan to ensure that the teaching was structured and effective. In this lesson plan, I detailed the learning objectives, the material to be taught, the teaching methods, and the activities to be carried out during the session. The preparation of this lesson plan is very important, because it not only helps me organize teaching but also provides clear guidance to achieve the expected learning objectives.

Step 5: Teaching Demo

After preparing the lesson plan, I continued by conducting teaching demos four times in two different classes. On October 7 and 14, I taught in grade 2, while on October 10 and 17, I taught in grade 1. Each teaching session lasted for 40 minutes, where I implemented the strategies that had been planned in the lesson plan to achieve the learning objectives that had been set. This experience gave me the opportunity to apply the theories that I had learned in the field, as well as interact directly with students.

During the teaching process, I received evaluations from my class teacher and supervisor. The feedback they provided was invaluable, as it helped me understand the strengths and weaknesses in the teaching methods that I used. These evaluations not only provided new perspectives on how I delivered the material, but also provided concrete suggestions for future improvements. This experience enriched my teaching skills and equipped me with deeper insights into effective teaching practices.

Step 6: Evaluation

During the teaching process, my class teacher and supervisor assessed my teaching process using the evaluation paper that had been provided. In the assessment, they noted various aspects, such as my ability to deliver the material, interaction with students, and the use of teaching methods that had been planned in the lesson plan. This evaluation process really helped me to get a clear picture of the effectiveness of my teaching and identify concrete steps for future development.

5.3      Outcomes of Practicum

After participating in the SEA Teacher program in Vietnam, I feel very grateful for the opportunity given to teach there. This experience not only gave me the opportunity to share knowledge, but also became a place to reflect on the teaching methods I use. I learned a lot about different teaching approaches, which greatly enriched my perspective in the world of education. Interacting with students and fellow teachers in Vietnam allowed me to develop my teaching skills and explore more effective strategies in delivering materials.

In addition to improving my academics, this program also helped me improve my communication skills, especially in English. Interacting with new friends from Vietnam and sharing experiences for almost a month in Cao Lanh City gave me many valuable memories. Together we explored interesting places in the city, strengthened friendships and understood each other's cultures.

5.4      The Challenges of Practicum

While teaching in Vietnam, I faced language barriers. This was because only a few students could understand English well. However, I managed to overcome this challenge by using basic English and body language to help students understand the material being taught. In addition, the presence of buddies as translators from English to Vietnamese was very helpful. This allowed me to communicate more effectively and ensure that all students could follow the lesson well. This approach not only facilitated the teaching and learning process but also created a more inclusive atmosphere in the classroom.

5.5      Overall Impression

Picture 22. Dong Thap University

Participating in the SEA Teacher program in Vietnam was a very valuable experience for me. I feel very helped by SEAMEO through this program, which allowed me to directly teach in another country. This opportunity gave me the chance to explore a different world of education and understand the cultural life in Vietnam. I learned many new things, from different teaching methods to how to interact with students in diverse contexts.

While in Vietnam, I felt fortunate to meet lecturers from Dong Thap University who were very supportive of us during our stay there. They not only provided academic guidance, but also shared valuable knowledge about local culture. In addition, the buddies who were always ready to help and accompany us made this experience even more enjoyable. I am grateful for the warm welcome and all the help they gave, which made me feel accepted and more comfortable.

I would also like to thank my campus, UNJ, for giving me the opportunity to participate in this student exchange program. The support from the campus is very important in this journey, and I feel proud to be able to represent UNJ at the international level. This opportunity is not only about academics, but also about building networks and understanding different perspectives.

During the program, I also really enjoyed meeting friends from various countries such as Vietnam, the Philippines, and Laos. We shared experiences and information about each other's cultures, which enriched my insight. These interactions made me realize how valuable cross-country friendships are and how we can learn from each other. Thank you to everyone who made this experience so memorable!

5.6      Suggestions for Future Improvement

The SEA Teacher student exchange program held by SEAMEO has been running well and has provided valuable experience for participants. However, for future improvements, it may be considered to add a more structured feedback session at the end of the program. This session can provide a forum for participants to share experiences and suggestions, as well as provide direct feedback on challenges faced and ideas for improvement. By gathering diverse perspectives, SEAMEO can continue to improve the quality of the program and ensure that the student experience is optimized in the future.
